James A. "Jim" Smith, 92, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away May 8, 2014, in Madison, Alabama.
Mr. Smith was born September 19, 1921, in Hunter, Missouri, to the late Fred Smith and Cassie Bowman Smith.
By age 14, he had already fallen in love with Maxine Jordan, with whom he would spend more than 70 years. They were married on December 5, 1943, in Tonopah, Nevada. His dear Maxine preceded him in death by only 22 days.
Mr. Smith served in the U.S Air Force during World War II. He was a retired salesman with the Blackwell Baldwin auto dealership in Poplar Bluff, and a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his daughter, Carol Smith Cook (Harold) of Madison, Alabama; three grandchildren, Shannon Cook Glass (Craig) of Arlington, Texas, Erin Cook Schrage (Steve) of St. Louis, Missouri, and Allison Cook of Huntsville, Alabama; and seven great-grandchildren, Jenna Glass, Andrew Glass, Anna Schrage, Rachel Schrage, Kyra Schrage, Mark Schrage and Daniel Schrage.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, as well as his son, James Dean "Jay" Smith, and brother, Larry Smith.
Visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, May 11, 2014 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m., with Dr. William Vail officiating.
