Marion Winters

October 1, 1936 — March 20, 2015

Marion L. Winters, 78, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away March 20, 2015 at the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center. He was born October 1, 1936 to Dewey and Edna (Murdock) Winters. He was joined in marriage to Frances E. Cross on March 3, 1962. Marion was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, teacher and Sunday School Superintendent. He served in the US Army as a radio operator, stationed in Germany. After his tour of duty was complete, he worked as a machinist for McDonnell-Douglas of St. Louis, until returning to Poplar Bluff to take a job with the US Post Office. He retired from the Post Office in 1996 to enjoy traveling, bible study, researching family genealogy, and spending time with his family. He is survived by his spouse; two daughters, Diana Sherrill (Kenny) of Rolla, and Janice Winters of Poplar Bluff; one son Roger Winters (Amy) of Columbia; six grandchildren, Matthew Sherrill (Amanda), Grace Sherrill, Ben Winters, Aaron Winters, Hannah Winters, and Emma Winters; one great- grandson, Jacob Sherrill; four sisters, Mary Helen Hargrove of Memphis, TN, Betty Richardson (Bob) of Dallas, TX, Peggy Sinden (Bill) of Ballwin, Barbara Sue Winters of St. Louis; one brother, Robert Winters (Barbara) of Port Angeles, Washington; sisters-in-law Barbara Winters of Poplar Bluff, Dean (Ray) Lumpkin of Poplar Bluff, Carol Cross of Fisk, Sue Terrance of Poplar Bluff, and Helen Cross of Poplar Bluff, and brother-in-law George Cross of Fisk. Preceding him in death are his parents; a brother, Dewey George Winters; a grandson, Caleb Winters; a brother-in-law, Otto Hargrove; a sister-in-law, Shirley Summers; father-in-law, Grover Cross and mother-in-law, Mae (Robinson) Cross. Visitation will be held from 5- 7 p.m. Sunday, March 22, 2015 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff. A graveside service will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, March 23, 2015 at the Mo. State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Mo. with full military rites. Bro. Matt Johnson will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be made to: Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1600 South 11th St. Poplar Bluff, Mo. 63901 or to the Alzheimer's Association, 9370 Olive Blvd. St. Louis, Mo. 63132.
